Advantages of Finding Affordable Therapy Options for Clients

In an effort to explore and understand the positive and negative aspects of professional counseling, this article examines the perspectives of several key stakeholders in the field. This research looked at the public's views relative to the quality of counseling and psychotherapy, hopes for future treatment effectiveness for various psychotherapy and counseling providers (including clinical psychologists, counseling psychotherapists, marriage and family therapists, clinical social workers, psychological counselors, mental health educators, pharmacists, and physical therapists), overall quality of service for psychotherapy and counseling services received, satisfaction with psychotherapy/counseling services received, psychotherapy/counseling service frequency, satisfaction with overall treatment process and overall experience of the patient/clinician relationship. The data was collected from a national random sample of adults who received counseling or therapy from licensed psychotherapy and counseling providers in two geographically and demographically diverse sites: one in the Midwest (nationally not classified) and one in the South (Arkansas, Mississippi, Kentucky and Tennessee). An online questionnaire was sent to those surveyed.

Overall, the research found that the majority of those surveyed had at least a fair level of agreement regarding the quality of care, the expected treatment effectiveness, the expected benefits of receiving counseling and psychotherapy, and the willingness to recommend their local providers to friends and families. However, there were notable differences when it came to service frequency, provider reputation, treatment effectiveness, provider culture and philosophy, satisfaction with the service, the need for psychotherapy/counseling and/or the need for treatment. For example, while almost all of those surveyed agreed that a significant proportion of their patients' problems could be easily and quickly resolved through ongoing counseling and psychotherapy, those in the Midwest and the South were more likely to report that they would not recommend a particular therapist or counseling provider to their friends or family because of the professional reputation or treatment effectiveness issues associated with that provider. Conversely, those in the North were less likely to report that they would not recommend a specific provider for family counseling and therapy.

In addition, the research did note that clients tended to remain satisfied with their therapists if they received ongoing treatment rather than just one or two sessions. The research also found that clients were willing to try more complex interventions when they had been initially recommended by a professional counselor. The study also found that clients tended to get better treatment outcomes if they saw a range of professionals, rather than a single counseling provider. Therefore, a mixed-professional atmosphere may be a good marketing strategy for an organization seeking to market itself to new clients while also providing quality services. There are many professional counselors available who specialize in various aspects of counseling, both within the clinical and psychological communities. This allows clients to consult a variety of counselors in their quest to find the best match for them. Also, many new clients prefer to work with therapists who have more experience in their field. Online services such as those provided by ClickBank, however, make it easier for clients to review the experiences of various counselors without requiring any contact with them in person.

Other aspects of counseling include therapy and support groups. While it has long been proven that support groups can have a positive impact on mental health, recent studies have suggested that the same results could be true for mental health services as well. Online providers of mental health services, therefore, should be able to take advantage of the power of these services by allowing their clients to join online support groups and get immediate feedback from those they are meeting. Having this information available to clients, may help them to decide which providers to work with and which could best serve their needs.

Finally, there is also the matter of affordability. Many people who are struggling with mental health concerns often have limited income. As a result, affordable therapy options are crucial to ensuring they receive quality care. Clients who can easily afford therapy might be more likely to take advantage of these options, especially if they also need to see a psychiatrist or psychologist for mental health concerns.
